Laser – The Universal Tool
How is it that light can be used to cut centimeter-thick steel plates, perform delicate heart operations, and produce cost-effective solar cells?
Concentrated light in the form of a laser beam can be used to process an extremely wide range of materials. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT we study the interaction between laser light and material. The results of our work show us how to use laser beams for different applications. We then develop laser processes and laser beam sources which can be used by our industrial partners in medical technology, manufacturing, measurement technology and testing. Examples of recent applications include characterizing fine dust in the atmosphere, producing resorbable implants and maintaining aircraft engines. In addition, we develop complete laser systems, including process monitoring, install them at customers’ sites and ensure that personnel are properly skilled to use them. Exciting work!
